Don't Sleep on Black Opal Stick Foundations

{Image from }

I've heard celeb makeup artist, Sam Fine, and my girl (who's also a makeup artist) Kat: rave about the Black Opal Foundation Sticks. I now know why! They give a medium coverage without feeling like anything is on your face. A flawless and weightless finish for $10 at the drugstore. It doesn't get much better than that. Apply them with a foundation brush or draw a few lines on your face with it and blend out with flat top face brush.

I wear shade Hazelnut. I've been using the stick for about a month and there's no turning back for me. I also don't use it all over my face. I only use it on my uneven areas on my face so it provides an even more natural look. Most of the time people can't tell that I have foundation on.

Makeup enthusiasts, the shade Black Walnut is good to sculpt/contour with on anyone with complexions lighter than that stick; even women with "high yellow" complexions. The secret to using it successfully that way is to blend, blend, blend! I learned this trick from AJ Crimson's workshop last summer.
I'm getting all these sticks for my professional make up kit. They are good and the price is right.

My Hair: Finally Gets Washed

It's about time. Ya girl went 4 weeks (and 1 day) without washing her hair. Bananas right? I didn't wash my hair in so long because I've been a combination of busy and lazy. A little after the 3 week mark, it started itching a lot and building up so I knew I couldn't let another weekend go by without washing it.

I misted my hair with my homemade hair mist and then added coconut oil in 6 (twisted) sections. I let it sit for no more than 10 mins and then washed my scalp and hair (with the twists still in) with my hair mud wash recipe. Man, do I dig my hair mud wash recipe. It always leaves my hair feeling so soft and clean!

I airdried in 12 braids with Kinky Curly Knot Today, my shealoe mix and Jane Carter Solution Wrap & Roll. The results are to the right. I did more braids than I normally do. This set came out ok but going forward I'm going to just do about 8 braids like usual. I also think that I don't really care for the Wrap & Roll. It's just kinda "eh" so I'll prob give it to a friend or family member who'll like it better.

Going forward, I don't think I will go that long between washes. This incident was really unplanned but I'm a roll with the punches kinda girl and have an adaptable outlook when it comes to my hair care. This incident did make me aware that it's not necessary for ME to wash my hair every week though. My hair suffered no ill effects and throughout the 4 weeks, I moisturized my hair whenever it felt dry and detangled when it was needed. But yea, my usual, every 1-2 weeks works just fine for me; I'll be sticking with that.

3 Tbsp Bentonite Clay
200 ml Aloe Vera Juice
3 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix and dump over head and massage into scalp and hair or spray on with a spray bottle and massage into scalp and hair. Rinse and style as desired.

Hair Talks

No, really, it does. Check out this skit by MsVCharles: (make sure you subscribe to her channel!) and her little cousin. Totally had me rollin.

Her and that other strand went at it! Haha. It's important we listen to our hair so we'll have more good hair days than bad. And remember, "it's just hair". Love it, care for it, style it, cut it, grow it; the possibilities are only as limited as you make them. :D

The Transformation

<--- Hammin it up back in Feb '09

I'm thinking of taking this blog into a new, yet old direction and I'm not sure what exact direction it is just yet. I've been injecting more things and aspects into it. It will still cover what I cover now but with a different energy that I don't really know how to explain to you guys. I just know that somewhere down the line, this almost stopped being fun and I started to witness my passion for this blog dying.

I feel like for a period of time, I got caught up in wanting this blog to be some chic, nicely packaged, commericial thing and it stifled a lot of my creativity. I feel like I could have been doing so much more with this blog if I hadn't become concerned with trying to make it more commercial and comparing it so much to others. I started to care how many followers I had, how many hits I got daily and monthly, where all the hits were coming from. I just feel like after a while, my blog lost some of its authenticity and originality because I found myself subconsciously "competing" with other sites and paying too much attention to what everyone else was doing. Due to all these factors, I lost the point of this blog's inception.

This blog serves as a healthy and creative outlet for me. I want it to be that way for a long time.

So, I guess, sit back and watch the transformation. It's started already, actually. I look forward to this again because I'm no longer so concerned with it being "perfect" or neatly packaged. It's my blog and shares my adventures, thoughts and what lights a fire under me. I've got luv for what everyone else is doing but I'm done paying attention to what everyone else is doing. From now on, I'm focused on just getting back to sharing my creative stratosphere with anyone interested.

My Hair: Think I'm Going Back to Paddle Brush

So I got the Tangle Teezer and had really good results with it.... But, I think I'm just going to go back to a paddle brush. It provides me with the same results and it has a handle. My only gripe with the Tangle Teezer has always been that it doesn't have a handle like traditional brushes. This may not be a topic of discussion for many but for me, holding onto it for dear life when I'm detangling with it so it doesn't fly outta my hand, is getting old. And my hand hurts.

I know it sounds trivial but it is what it is for me.

Goody Styling Therapy Copper Styling Brush

No love lost though. It was only $10 anyhow. While I'm not rich, I'm glad that this wasn't a "costly" experience. So I am going to give my Tangle Teezer (cleaned and sterilized of course) to my co-worker/friend for her daughter's thick, coily hair. I think it's not as bad when using it on someone else's hair and not your own.

Next up: I plan to make flaxseed gel next month. Oh and I still haven't washed my hair yet. Going on 4 weeks now. It must get washed this weekend......

My Hair: The Latest

I haven't washed my hair is just over 3 weeks and I may or may not get around to washing it this weekend. I've been busy and lazy at the same time. I moisturize it when necessary, which isn't nightly that's for sure, and have been wearing it out in a braid out or up in a high puff.

I haven't experienced major build up or any negative effects actually. I quite fancy not washing my hair every week. Hmm......

Carry on kurlies. Carry on.

On the Wish List: Curlformers

I finally am interested in trying these out. The results I see on other's hair is always fabulous. I don't know how soon I will get them though since spring is here, which means more moisture in the air (and more reversion: not what I'm going for if I'm trying to achieve a specific curl pattern). So maybe come the fall, I'll be ready to purchase some and give them a try.

Are these on any of your wish lists? Have any of you tried them? What did you think? How do they differ from a flexi rod set or do they?

Product Review: Kinky Curly Knot Today Natural Leave In/Detangler

I just recently got around to trying out this popular leave in. I didn't purchase this; I got it from a product swap (blog post on the beauty of product swaps in the near future!) with my curlfriend and accomplice in adventures, Kat: I've tried this product in different ways with a very good results. You can use this product as a detangler or as a leave in. Before I gave up rinse out conditioners, I used it like that to detangle with. If you are familiar with my old hair care regimen, then you know that I used to detangle and condition my hair before I washed it (I now detangle after I've washed it. Post on my new hair regimen soon.). This leave in/detangler has an opaque, clear color, cream-gel consistency and great slip for detangling. This is not the popular way to use it though.

Most naturals use it as a leave in (and seal with an oil over top) which is the second way I tried it and the only way I use it now since I don't use rinse out conditioners anymore. It leaves my hair feeling so soft and moisturized every time I air dry my hair with it. I now understand the craze over this product. The scent is light and doesn't linger so those sensitive to fragrances won't be bothered by the smell of this.

While it is a good product and I would glady recommend it to others, I am not sure that I will purchase it frequently once this bottle runs out. I know of a lot of good leave ins/hair moisturizers that provide the same effect and are cheaper is why. Maybe I will occasionally buy it though to support what Shelley Davis, the creator and owner of Kinky Curly:, is doing. I truly enjoy buying products and services made for us and by us.

Sustainable Hair Care: Lola's Green Hair

I love to see our people creating businesses and services that uplift and enhance our community. I'm totally impressed with what with creator and owner, Lola Zabeth, of Lola's Green Hair is doing. At Lola's Green Hair, you can buy or sell gently used hair care products. Instead of letting a product that was a #fail for you collect dust under your sink, why not sell it? You get some of your money spent back. Or on the other hand, maybe you want to try a product you've been hearing good things about. Maybe it wasn't so good to someone else and they're selling it on the site. You now get to try the product for less. It's a win win for both parties and I really dig that it encourages us to recycle and re-use; be less wasteful.

I have some products I want to sell on there that were "eh" for me. You should if you have some too! Please support this enterprising black woman and what she's doing.
