Black Hair Care Professional Reniece Talks about the Brazilian Keratin Treatment

I did a post on the Brazilian Keratin Treatment, aka BKT, early last year. It always concerned me that if you didn't wear a face mask and goggles and weren't located in a well ventilated area that the fumes from baking the treatment onto your hair would create immediate side effects like nausea, dizziness, burning eyes and throat, runny nose, etc. Many brands that said their products had no or low amounts of formaldehyde lied. I still don't recommend it to anyone.

Check out black hair care professional, Reniece's http://www.youtube.com/reniecehairtv, video below. It's very informative and personalized as well since she herself tried the treatment.

Style Files: Flat Twists and Mini Rolls

Last week, I wore a puff all week. It felt good to have my hair semi-out so all this week, I put it back in a protective style. This style I chose was inspired by a recent vid I saw from one of my natural hair favorites, CurlyChronicles: www.youtube.com/curlychronicles . I put 2 strand flat twists on the left side and then I put the rest of the free hair into mini rolls. I luv how it came out. It was fun rocking this but you know me, come this weekend it's #ontothenext hairstyle. :D

On the This Week's Hair Menu

Throwback! This was me back in the day when I had my fresh TWA and was brand new to the Natural Land. :D

Today, Tuesday, on lunch: Buying Bentonite clay, to try it out this weekend, and re-upping on aloe vera gel

Sunday morning:
- Trying out the bentonite clay! I will definitely be doing a video on it.
- Making my favorite conditioner recipe with the aloe vera gel I bought on Tuesday
- Try the Kinky Curly Knot Today that my friend gave me as a LEAVE IN (I know you're thinking, but Milan, it IS a leave in. I didn't read the bottle right and used it as a detangling conditioner. I ruffled some feathers on the vid I did of me trying it on Youtube. Lol.)
- Roller setting this bish :D

What's on your hair menu?

On my future hair menu = when my eco styler gel is used up, I'll be making flaxseed gel. I'm getting back on my mixtress tip.

Bueno Studded Weekender Duffle

Every woman who's a woman should have one of these in her posession, I feel. I'm always on the go on my weekends taking mini trips to Jersey, Philly, West Chester County.....Lol. So a weekender is a must in my adventurous lifestyle. Even if your lifestyle isn't as adventurous as mine it's a good staple for a short stay out of town that doesn't require a full out suitcase.

Ms. Lala Talks Twists and Maintenance

Kurlies, I'm so determined to get twists working in my favor again. I'm so determined because my hair thrived on them last winter and I'm still chasing that "high" from my first set of tiny twists I ever did last year. CLICK HERE to see how beautious that set was. I want that set again! My hair is still thriving now but I like twists dag nabbit. And this 2 part vid that LaLa from NaturalHairGrowth101: http://www.youtube.com/naturalhairgrowth101, has me thinking about giving a go at it again.

Think I'm gonna try a set again very soon and make them small, like 6-hours-to-complete-small. But if I can get them to last about 3 to 4 weeks, it will be worth it. Shoot I even had to look at an old video of MINE to see what I did that had my one set of tiny twists looking so good. Lol. Thank goodness for documentation of what I do to my hair.

Drink Your Water

I started slacking on the water department but I'm back in full effect. The first of this month, I went and bought a 32 fl oz, bpa free, water bottle. According to the Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.com/, the general rule of thumb is to strive to drink 8 8 fl oz glasses of water daily. So if I drink two of them in a day, I achieve the general goal. I definitely feel a difference when I drink the recommended amount of water as opposed to when I don't. My skin glows and stays clear when I do. So I've got my water bottle and I'm good to go.

Do you drink enough water daily?

Product Review: Jergens Naturals Ultra Hydrating Lotion

I am always striving to live or a more eco and health conscious lifestyle and use more "natural" ingredient containing products. While visiting my family for the Holidays, I needed some lotion. I went to Walmart and noticed that Jergens has a line of Naturals lotions. I think they're trying to recoup some of their dollars lost of from this new movement towards healthier ingredient products. Who can blame them, right?

I purchased the Ultra Hydrating, which is 95% natural ingredients, one b/c my skin, is dry (except for my face which is oily) and that's the one I used to use, back in the day, in their original/regular line. What are my thoughts? I like it. I use it how I use my lotions of choice for my body: after I shower, I immediately apply coconut oil to my skin first and then put lotion over top. The result is baby soft skin. Jergens was my favorite lotion brand when I was ignorant to healthier product ingredients. When I become less ignorant about the latter, it broke my heart that I had to quite their shea butter one; that was my jam-no dry skin in sight even in the coldest of winters! But I digress.......

Now, I'm not getting it twisted. There are definitely better lotions out that are dedicatedly down for the healthy ingredients and eco friendly cause. No where does it say that this product is biodegradeable and even though it's paraben free, it contains some debateable preservatives like phenoxyethanol. I think that you gotta start somewhere though. This could be a good gateway for those new to more natural ingredient products and who's funds are low or are on a tight budget. This 16.8 fl oz bottle cost me no more than $5. Some people really don't have $12 to spend once a month per 7 fl oz bottle of Karen's Body Beautiful Body Lotion, especially if they're stocking up for a whole household. You know what I'm saying?

I will still use my "natural" lotions mostly but it's nice that I have a little better of a drugstore lotion choice when I'm in a pinch and don't have access to the lotions I normally use.

Have any of you tried the Jergens Naturals line of lotions? What do you think?

Flirt Limited Edition Eyeshadow Palette: Pink and Purple

I'm kicking off the Flirt Limited Edition Eyeshadow Palette series with this soft pink and purple eye look. It can be worn for a day or work look and taken into the evening by smoking out the liner or adding more purple to outer v and crease. The purple looks like a blue purple in the palette but when you blend it out good, it makes a nice purple. If you want more of a pop of purple, simply add more and blend it out a little less.

Below are the colors I used in the palette.

Holla if you want a tutorial.

How to Set Hair Goals- My Opinions on Them Anyway

{Saw this image at Hi-ImCurrentlyObsessed.tumblr.com

All of us hair crazed, blog, Youtube and forum junkies usually have goals on top of goals on top of goals for our hair. We've been exposed to the black women with the "mythical" long and pretty kinky kurls hair types from tight coils and kinks to loose waves, the common sense "secrets" of excellent hair care and growth and now we're ready to get in on the action and have us some hair and lots of it (usually that's the case anyway).

My overall shred of advice is to not drive yourself crazy with your hair goals. Set goals that are challenging but feasible. Example; if you are just learning your hair and the fundamentals of good hair care practices, it's a bit lofty to create a goal of BSL hair in a year from now when you currently have ear length hair and an average (6 inches per year) hair growth rate. A more feasible goal would be NL (neck length) or SL (shoulder length) hair a year from now.

The key to achieving your hair goals is to create smaller sizable goals, I like to call them stepping stone goals, to attain them. Example; early 2010, at shoulder length (when stretched), I decided that I wanted to grow my hair to my waist (which I rethink almost everyday....) in its stretched state. My hair grows the average 6 inches per year. With my hair growth rate in mind, I divided this ultimate goal into smaller goals: APL by Dec 2010 (which I achieved!), BSL by the summer, MBL by the end of the year, and WL some time in 2012.

January A Few of my Favorite Things Winner

The winner for this month's A Few of my Favorite Things giveaway is...........

This was a tough decision because you all shared great styling ideas for the Maggie Glynn piece and I could totally envision them all. Chika, I really liked that your look mixed a menagerie of pieces, textures, materials/fabrics and designs so you are the winner. Please email me to discuss what color you'd like and shipping details.

To all that entered, thank you so much! More giveaways to come. (I may even do another for a neck cowl.) Next month's giveway will be posted on the 1st. I'll give you a hint on what it could be: it's one of my favorite hair care products that I talk about a lot. Don't have any idea? Well, stay tuned till next month to find out then!

5 Minute Hair Do

I used to do this 'do back in the day when I was relaxed. Don't know why it took me so long to revisit this style. As we all know, afro textured hair can be styled in most of the same styles straight hair can; just is more textured with more attitude. This style is uber easy to do. There is some night time preparation but not much.

As you can see, the style has a front bang. I sectioned off this area, lightly misted it with some of my hair spritz (water, aloe vera juice and grapeseed oil) and sealed with the Darcy's Botanicals PKHM and put in 3 2-strand flat twists. The back I also moisturized with my spritz and PKHM and just put into a few large braids to keep it stretched. I tied a scarf around my head and went to bed.

All I did in the morning was take everything down, put the hair in the back into an octopus clip and left the bang out. Viola!

Some variations you can do:
- Put the back in a bun, french roll/twist or french braid
- Pin the bangs up a cute funky way

Depending how you accessorize and/or dress, this hairstyle can be dressy all the way down to casual.

Stay naturally fly.

Who's Excited

Who's excited for Marsha Ambrosius' album to drop? Me! Me! Me! She was one half of one of my favorite R&B/neo-soul duos, Floetry. The album was supposed to be released October 26th but now it's slated for February 22nd release. I'm already diggin Hope She Cheats On You (With a Basketball Player). Listen to it below if you haven't heard it already.

Funny, right? But it's also has a nice sound and her voice is the icing on it. Hey, we've all felt something similar to what this song is conveying, even if it was only for a fleeting moment or, err, a few months, about one (or possibly more/all) of our exes. Pre-order yours now on Amazon.com for $8.70. I did. :D

AGrlCanMac and Cincinnati Connect!

One of my goals for the blog this year was to build more kinky, kurly, koily hair related networks and contacts in Cincinnati, OH. My parents have lived in the Queen city for almost 10 years and when I come to visit them, it's only natural, pun intended, that I try to get the scoop on the Cincy natural scene. I'm planning on maybe even hosting a natural hair meet up there in the summer. I have a few Cincy businesses in mind that I would want to reach out to for sponsorship. So any Cincy residents that read this blog, let me know what you guys think and spread the word. Share any ideas you have on what you would want to see; vendors? workshops? discussions? etc. Let me know! I want to see what kind of response I get. If it's big enough, I'll move forward with it.

For my NYC area readers, I have some things up my sleeve for here too so it's all good. I just may end up being the hardest working, natural hair enthusiast in 2011 and beyond!

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

{Image from addic7ed.com}

Over my holiday break I got into The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. I'd heard of it before but because I don't have HBO, I never got a chance to luv it like everyone else. My parents have the whole first season DVD set, I indulged in them while home visiting and now I'm hooked! Jill Scott's a great actress. She plays a detective named Precious. The show is set and filmed in Botswana. It's really inspiring too b/c she a woman who starts her own business doing what she feels passionate about: helping people and upholding justice in most of her cases. She's so good with the accent and mannerisms and such that my mother's Ugandan friend just KNEW she wasn't American. We had refute her profusely and let her know that Jill Scott is a Black American from Philly. Lol.

I also couldn't help but fall in pure adoration of Jill's wardrobe in the episodes. And seeing that gorgeous fro had me wanting to wear mine out with a cute head band too. In the spring time, Milan....... Check out this show if you haven't already. It's also interesting to see how Westernized areas of African countries have become and how that the word "fat" doesn't seem hurtful; it just is what it is. I luv'd when Jill's character said to someone regarding her size, "I am of traditional build." Go girl; right you are.

Check out the show and be inspired by the music, colors, Jill's hair and her earrings and pretty Ankara fabric for her dresses and head bands. Anika Noni Rose plays her part well, too, as Jill's character's skittish and rather uptight but genuine and dedicated secretary. 97%! You'll know what the sentence before means if you watch the series. Hehe.

Book Worm: Piece of Cake

{Image from Amazon.com}

I got a Barnes & Noble Nook for Christmas. :D I'm still a ride or die library girl but e-Readers are da bomb dot com (yeah I said it) and space efficient when it comes to traveling. I had been meaning to read Piece of Cake: A Memoir for a while now and decided there was no time like the recent to download it for my plane ride back from Cincinnati to NYC last week. Cupcake (La'Vette) Brown tells the story of her life and, yikes, what a journey she's been on. She's now a successful lawyer and travels all over the country giving inspirational speeches.

I'm about a third of the way into the book and all I can say is WOW. The writing is raw, gritty and poignant; no sugar coating anything. Cupcake gives it to you straight with no chaser; like how she saw it and lived it. Her life was turned upside down at the young age of 11; I mean really eff'd up. I keep thinking this book is fiction but it's not! So far, the message I am receiving from this book is 1) cherish your family- you never know how much time you have left to spend with them 2) how flawed the children services/foster care system is especially back in the 70's and 80's and 3) children can live through just about anything no matter how horrific at times; its in man's innate nature to survive.

My final thoughts on the book once I've finished it. If you've read the book, share your thoughts, well some of them anyway. We can discuss more once I've finished.

Grab a copy at your local library, download it on you e-Reader or buy it brand new or gently used here:
