Eye See Styling N Profylin On a Dime

Ok, maybe not a dime but how about $10? These frames are $10 (not including any other fees, etc.). I don't know a recessionista who's budget this can't fit into.

Kinky-kurls + a funky pair of glasses (or shades) = You. Can't. Tell. Me. NOTHIN!

I so want these frames. I think that they have just the right amount of sophistication and funk that I'm going for. Now they're not designer, for all my label whores, but they are slammin. Works for me b/c I don't discriminate.

There was this thread on Afro Glitz (Yes, I joined yet another hair board. LMAO. What can I say? I'm addicted.) about who wears glasses. And one lady was talking about ever since she found frames for cheap, she didn't know how to act anymore.

I'm sure there are other sites but the site that the member was referring to was this one. After seeing this, I'm sure a lot of us aren't going to know how to act! They have some really hot styles. They have a bunch that are $8 too. It's bananas. I wasn't fond of the metal styles but the plastic styles are on point. So if you can dig that, get your Curious George on and check them out.

Gimme 10!

All you need is a few minutes to look fab. I did this look in less than 10 minutes. All I have on is: (stick) foundation, concealer, eye shadow primer, eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss. I filled in my brows too. It sounds like a lot but it’s really not. It took me less than 10 minutes to complete, remember?

I put the primer on my lids b/c they are dark (a lot of times people think I already have eye shadow on. LOL) and it lightens them. So if you don’t have this going on, you may choose to opt out of this step. I put liner on to accentuate my eyes. I could have easily skipped this and shaved a few seconds off my time.

I rarely leave the house without my brows done. I maintain my own and because they are sparse in some areas, I fill them in with a brow pencil. When you’ve got those “so crispy” brows, there’s nothing anybody can say. Your brows really lay down the frame work for your face and they take you a long way when they look slammin.

That’s it; no magic. Very simple and easy steps that yield great results. Who said it takes forever to look good?

"Green With Envy" Eyes

Was feeling in a "springy" mood and banged out this look yesterday. I also went to switch my Ohio drivers license for a New York one yesterday so my pic should look "fun". LOL. You probably won't even be able to see the green. Driver's license pics are so crummy.

Anywhoo, the tutorial for this look will is up on my YouTube channel. Or you can view it on my video bar on the right hand side (you may have to scroll up or down to find it depending on where this post is on the page).

Sunday Fun

So it was a "mah-velous dahling" kinda day here in Nyc. I'm talking high 50's and sunny skies. I met up with some friends in BK for brunch and chillaxing at Rustik Tavern on Dekalb Ave. Luv this spot b/c it's got such a cozy, relaxed, chic vibe and everyone seems mad coo. There's a delightful patio in the back that becomes lit up at night. I luv sitting out there.

And I can't forget to mention that the food and drinks are delish. Today I was torn between the Butcherboy Burgers, which are your choice of turkey burger or beef burger sliders, or the Rustik Personalized Omlette that comes with home fries. Yummers. It was so tough but the (turkey) burgers won out and they were oh so tasty. It was just the right amount of food. I wasn't stuffed to the gut but I wasn't still hungry either; I was satisfied.

I also stopped by the new Ikea in the BK (I was all up in the BK today.). Bad idea. A nice Sunday afternoon = people left and right. (There was a giant tour bus that unloaded a bunch of people for crying out loud.) I went in looking for a specific table and chairs that my mother saw and said would look cute in my place. There were so many people and children running/milling about and clogging the walkways, I lost the patience to find what I was looking or a free sales associate for assistance. So I decided eff it, I'm outta here. Any of you that have been in an Ikea know that they are like giant mazes so it took me forever to get out of the place.

The moral of the story: unless you like hoards of people and children running amok as part of your shopping experience, you will want to go at a less populated time like early in the morning or during the week. So I now have to go back some time this week.

Another weekend down. *does the Sunday sigh* Toodles.

Out & About: What to do on Wednesdays???

All my NYC ladies that like to get down, check out my girl, Chrissy's, Wednesday after-work event. Chrissy and the City shuts it down every Wednesday night: "We Go Hard Wednesdays" at the 507 Bar & Grill in Williamsburgh (Brooklyn). They've got great service, great food and drinks being served and great music. Especially if you're West Indian or luv West Indian music, they show lots of luv!

So if you've had a crazy day or a not so crazy day, check it out, have a drink and shake a tail feather for a couple hours. I went a couple weeks ago and had a fabulous time. My kinky-kurly ladies were out in full force!

For more info on her future events, check out her website. You can scroll down on the right side and she is under my Blogs The Can Mac section. If you're too lazy to do that, Click here

Yours truly posing for a photo op. LOL. Me, Chrissy, and friends. Luv ya girl!

Dr. Bronners Shikakai Soap

Darn you,Tracey, and your awesome product reviews. Now I want to try the Dr. Bronner Shikakai Soap!

She says it provides the same results as her (Dr. Bronners) castile soap mix recipe (which I use now) to cleanse the scalp (and hair) minus all the mixing. I'm trying to get out of PJ land, honest I am!

Kurly Directory Add On: Black Girl With Long Hair

So I came across this post on Black Girl With Long Hair and thought it was quite interesting. They did a poll on what us au naturale ladies thought was lacking in moisturizing our situations. I share many of the same thoughts as some of these ladies.

Which reminds me, I didn't add Black Girl With Long Hair to the Kurly Directory. So they have now been added.

They provide a plethora of info on hair care and styles, interviews with you're everyday natural sistas, and thought provoking natural hair discussions-as Leila, one of the moderators says, they "get deep into this natural ish". LOL.

What's Your Hair Growth Potion?

Meaning what practices and/or products do you use/do to give your hair growth rate a boost?

My hair grows the average 0.5" per month. Since I recently did the BC back in December (2008), I'm starting from scratch and on the grow. But there are some things I've done that I feel help rev up my growth rate. So here's

My Growth Potion:

~ Exercising 3-5 days a week
~ Drinking water (3-4 17oz glasses of water per day)
~ Eating healthy
~ Taking prenatal vitamins (not for a pregnancy!) and chlorella
~ Oiling my scalp when in braids (or twists when/if I start doing them)

I oil my scalp with an oil blend I make myself. Here's the current recipe if you're interested in trying it:

1) Jojoba oil
2) Rosemary essential oil
3) Peppermint essential oil
4) Nettle extract

NOTE: Those pregnant or that have high blood pressure should NOT use rosemary essential oil.

I luv jojoba oil b/c it's light and my scalp absorbs it. When I tried other oils that my hair likes like EVOO or coconut oil, my scalp wasn't havin it and it would create nasty build up. But you have to choose an oil that works best for you. For some, EVOO or another oil is just fine. Experiment. Trial and error is the only way you are going to discover what your scalp and hair likes and dislikes.

Other EOs you can use.....

There are a plethora of other essential oils that aid in stimulating growth like lavendar oil, eucalyptus oil, ylang ylang, sage, etc. Once again, experiment. These are just the ones that I like in my blend but by all means, do you. If you don't like peppermint oil or how rosemary oil smells (b/c it is on the strong side), then use another. Like I always say, the world is your oyster ladies!

I don't do scalp massages anymore (too lazy) but they are also great for stimulating growth; giving your current growth rate a boost. I posted a vid back in January demonstrating the proper way to do scalp massages.

I feel that this should be in everyone's hair growth potion. Your hair is growing everyday buuuuut it just doesn't grow 0.5" a day, ya know? So you just gotta chill: take good care of your hair, preserve those ends b/c that's how you keep your length/growth (a whole nother post!), be as healthy as you can and it will all come together. Taking pictures monthly or bi-monthly is the best way I see my progress and say, wow, my hair really IS growing. For me, that's one of the only ways I can tell. Give it time. Even God needed a few days to create everything!

Pink and Purple Eyes

Using the L'Oreal HIP Mettalic Duo in Sculpted.

I posted a review/look with this duo last summer but decided to do it again b/c I feel my make up skills have improved since then.

You like? The tutorial will be up on my YouTube channel this weekend. (I apologize for the lighting; it's not the best. I have to set up shop somewhere else so my future videos will be better.) So get your Curious George on and check me out! I plan to bang out more make up looks vids so stay tuned and subscribe to my channel if you haven't already. Stay beautiful!

LV Earrings Lust

I am an earring fanatic. The bigger the better! I luv the chandelier styles, hoops, beaded hoop earrings, etc. I have boxes full of them. I have a pair in almost any color and for every occassion. My friends n fam stay knocking on my door to borrow a pair for an event or night out. And I'm always more than happy to pick out a pair that will make them look fab-they just betta give them back when it's over. LOL. I just love how depending on what pair you wear, you can transform how you look to whichever way you choose. Your face is such a fun canvas. I will never stop luving to adorn it. :0)

I am lusting after some earrings like the ones pictured below for this spring/summer. They are soooo hot!

I think with a big kinky-koily mop up top (referring to hair. LOL.) and these earrings (and a cute summer dress) you've got an absolutely dope look. Especially my TWA ladies. Big earrings and TWAs = HOTNESS! Any of you familiar with this pair know that they are from the Louis Vuitton spring '09 collection. Maybe I'll try my hand at making a pair similar. Hmmm..... I have been feeling crafty lately......

Banded Sandals Are Hot

Ok, I want these more than the Kenzo espadrilles I featured earlier this week. I'm REALLLY REALLLLY feelin these banded sandals by Theory. They are so fresh.

Why do I always like the expensive stuff? They're between $300-$400. Usually, I can't fathom spending this much on shoes, hangbags-wouldn't even blink, but shoes? Nah. But aint these bad? It's either a knock-off or a 2nd job......... I might get a 2nd job for these suckers!

You can find them at

African Formula Styling Gel

I need something in place of my Aubrey Organics B5 Design Gel. I mean, it works great but it STINKS! It has a very strong, woodsy smell that I thought I could get used to but it's been a few months now and I'm still not used to it. It half-way nauseats me. I'm going to sell it, swap it, whatever. It's getting ghost from my home. So I need a gel that performs just as well minus that nauseating smell.

I was on Jenteel's fotki drooling over her gorgeous hair when I came across her products albums. In there was a picture of this all natural and organic styling gel called African Formula Styling Gel. If you know me by now, anything that I want to learn more about, I "Google it". So that's exactly what I did and learned where I can buy it.

You can get it at Penn Herb. It's not cheap, $9.95 for a 4 oz jar (this is the only size I've seen it come in), but Jenteel gave it a good review. If it works and doesn't smell like the B5 Design Gel, I'll pay! I'm spending most of this year in braids anyway, so I won't use it up fast.

I love that all the ingredients are natural; no ingredients created in a lab. Check em out:

INGREDIENTS: Purified Water; Marshmallow Root Gel; Gacanth and Gum Arabic Blend; Botanical extracts of Peach Leaves, Birch, Coltsfoot, Horsetail, Rosehip Seed, Calendula, and Citrus Seed; Plant proteins; Natural oils of Aloe Vera, Calendula, Castor, Coconut, and Jojoba; Hydrokeratin; Panthenol; Biotin; Inositol; Natural vitamins A, E, and D; Vegetable aroma. NO animal ingredients. NO animal testing.

It's been added to the wish list. I just need this and the Afro Detangler and that should finally complete my holy grail product line up.

PS (I got me some (Jamila) henna! Got it from a local Indian grocer in the City (Kalustyan's on 28th n Lexington). I will do a review on it when I take my braids down next month and do a henna treatment. I got the Afro Veda PUR Whipped Gelly too. A fellow LHCFer, luv LHCF!, sold it to me for a price I couldn't refuse! So there will be a review on that soon too. I'm hoping it's a more affordable Kinky-Curly Curling Custard. We'll see!)

So Unladylike

Ok, I need to rant. Did anyone see the most recent episode of the Bad Girls Club? Is anyone else not disgusted by how two of the roommates, Aleeya and Boston, jumped Amber M and then gloated about it? Like are. You. SERIOUS? Now I know Amber M is no angel-far from it, but for real for real. Jump her? And then proceed to kick her while she’s down? She was kicked in her face and on her side more than once. Wow. Those 2 def deserved to go home.

Stuff like that is so sad and can get me very angry. There are many people I can’t stand but they are never worth me turning into some kind of a heartless animal, jumping someone then “kicking them when they’re down” and proceed to brag about it. For one, I don’t give negativity that much of my energy. It’s pointless and it really doesn’t make you feel better ultimately. Maybe for a few minutes but then what?

I already had some opinions about a lot of them (the only one I like is Tiffany) but after watching that, I lost what little respect I had left for them. They are trifling, far from what I would call ladies and what they did to Amber M deserves to be done to them and see how they would like it. Those girls are so lucky she didn’t press charges b/c I know I sure would have. Don’t EVER give a person that much power over you that you turn into something ugly. Real talk. Please don’t find yourself acting that atrocious b/c if you plant bad seeds, you will so get a nasty harvest. Believe that. That is NOTHING to be proud of. I’m all for defending yourself but to haul off and attack somebody b/c you dislike them and kick them while they’re down, I’m not with that at all. That’s malicious and a coward’s move. Carry yourself with pride and never give your power to other people. I’m so disgusted right now. *End rant. Back to our regularly scheduled blogging.*

Kurly Girl Directory Add On's

When I find sites beneficial to the kinky-kurly-koily manes, I must share them! So adding on to the Kurly Girl Directory. Sites to check out:

Keep It Kinky: I luv this chica's site b/c it's loaded with dope natural hairstyle pics and tutorials! I can't wait to try loads of them once my hair is long enough or when I'm rocking individual braids. If you ever get bored with your hair, check out this site to become re-inspired. It so dispells the myth that your "style options are limited with natural hair".

Pretty Dimples01's YouTube Channel: She provides great tutorials on how to do all kinds of fly hairstyles. Once again, can't wait to try them once my hair is long enough. She creates so many haute ones!

Kinnks Online Directory: The name says it all. It's an online directory compiled of various resources for natural hair including site recommendations, natural hair blogs- we are on there!, articles, etc.

That's all for now. To see the very first Kurly Girl Directory post, scroll down on the right side and select the Hot Topic "Kurly Girl Directory". Lataz gataz.

I Think I Want One: Kindle 2: Amazon's Wireless Reading Device

I think I want one of these. Although I feel like if I get one, I will be betraying my beloved paper books. I'm weird, but I love the smell of the paper and the act of turning the pages. But I like this b/c it's much more sleek: 1/3in in profile, lighter: weighing in at 10.2 ounces, and chic. And you know I adore things that are chic. :0) It's wireless, so all you do is purchase your "books" from the actual device anytime; anywhere; no monthly fees or searching for Wi-Fi hotspots, they download and you're good to go. You can also download newspapers/newspaper subscriptions and magazine issues. It's 3GB and can hold over 1,500 books!

Think of how hot this is for traveling or my fellow, fly NYC ladies taking the train to work. You have your whole library on this sucker and don't have to lug multiple books, magazines, etc. in your bag. It's a pricey investment but the "books" are cheaper than what you would pay for a brand new paper book.

Click the link at the very bottom of this page to learn more about it.

I don't know if this would be the end all be all for me. Paper books will always have a special place in my home for them. But I think I would def like this for traveling. When I'm traveling, I always have books in tow to read and they weigh my bag down. This would eliminate shoulder and back pain. LOL. Do any of you have one? If so, share your reviews/opinions.

More faces to beat to get this too!

Kenzo 293921 Womens Espadrille

So feelin these.
Kenzo Womens Espadrilles

I would rock these with summer dresses or a pair of tailored wide leg pants.

So gonna have a beat a few faces to be able to afford them!!!!

Chlorella Stats: Bought it Yesterday

So I got my chlorella yesterday and took 1 tablet. I went to my local Vitamin Shoppe and bought their brand Super Chlorella. Each tablet contains 1000mg or 1gm. The 300 tablet bottle cost me about $21. So, per my research, I am to introduce this SLOWLY to my body. So here's my introduction schedule:

* This Week--> 3/9 thru 3/15: 1 tablet per day
* Next Week--> 3/16 thru 3/22: 2 tablets per day
* Week After--> 3/23 thru 3/29: 3 tablets per day

I think I will stay at 3 from then on. Many received great results taking 3gm daily so, I'm coo with that. Although, who knows, I may eventually go up to 5gm but that won't be for a while. When I use this bottle up, I might move on to a powdered form that I can just add to my juice or a shake/smoothie.

I will be keeping track of this and hope to experience some results soon. Some people reported feeling a difference in their energy levels in a few days! Hope I'm one of those lucky ducks. I'll update when I get to 3gm a day; so a couple weeks.

A Grl Can Mac Exclusive

Chlorella: I'm Getting Some TODAY!

Yes, people, I'm going to get some of this TODAY to start taking. LHCF ladies are reporting receiving noticeable hair growth rate increases. If that's not enough to sway you, chlorella is called a super food. When I saw these two things, I instantly became interested and did what I always do when I am looking for information on something, I "googled" it and am here to share what I learned.

It is a blue-green algae that's harvested in Japan. This algae is chock full of numerous nutrients and boasts boosting your overall health, skin, hair, nails, circulation in your body, reducing odors from your body; like fresher breath and detoxing your body (your poop turns GREEN!). Also, because it detoxes your body, it's cleaning your blood and can reduce your risk for colon cancer.

Because it detoxes your body, be prepared when you first start taking it to be going to the bathroom a lot. LMAO. I read some stories of women just barely making it home. So I was laughing so hard but I will definitely be keeping this in mind. Once you've got past the initial detox, it keeps you regular. According to Chlorella Factor, if your poop isn't green, then you're not taking enough. So there's your determining factor if you are or aren't taking enough.

A Hub Pages article on chlorella says:

Chlorella is a storehouse of concentrated nutrients. Its nutritional analysis is so impressive, it is purported to contain everything needed to support life on earth. One of its most remarkable nutritional qualities is its high protein content; 50-60 percent with all the essential amino acids including a high content of lysine for optimum health.

As an all-vegetable source, Chlorella also provides impressive amounts of Beta Carotene, Vitamins C, E, K and the full range of B-Vitamins. It has more Vitamin B12 than beef liver and is an excellent source of this “feel-good” vitamin. The minerals in Chlorella include calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and trace amount of manganese, iodine and zinc.

Click here to read the rest of the article.

Chlorella Factor also recommends introducing this into your diet slowly:

-there is no upper limit, but introduce chlorella into your diet gradually and monitor your stools. Since chlorella can result in mild diarrhea in some persons, introduce it slowly. (Your body will adapt over a period of a few weeks, allowing you to take more.)

So don't get gung ho on them right away. Some LHCF ladies did and reported getting cramps, so please introduce it slowly as recommended. Chlorella Factor also recommends once you are used to it, you should be taking 5gm daily.

I think paired with the prenatal vitamins I just started taking (like a lil over a week ago), I think I'll be good to go hair growth wise and overall health wise. Killing 2 birds with one stone, yay! I already feel a difference from taking the prenatal vitamins and it's only been a lil over a week since I first started taking them. My skin has always been pretty good, but it's even better now. It just feels great. I'm loving the results. Plus, the chlorella is good for your overall health. Because it detoxes your body, you end up looking GREAT! Many women have reported weight loss as well. So those looking to lose a couple pounds a healthy way, here's one of them.

Updates on this super food very soon! Any of you lovely ladies taking chlorella? Please share your thoughts/results with this.

Any takers to try this with me?

Let's Talk Transitioning

For those of you new to the blog, I posted updates throughout my transitioning journey and have posted other posts providing various transitioning tips. Please check them out. If you go to the right side (you may have to scroll down a bit) and click on the label "Transitioning", you'll be directed to all my posts dedicated to transitioning so far.

I mentioned some of them in the vid but here are what I feel the main things to always remember when transitioning (and that helped me out):

1) Create a regimen that incorporates moisture, moisture, and more moisture!

Many ladies get into co-washing their hair, some more frequent than others. This provides your hair with a lot of moisture therefore, better manageability and less breaking. Moisturizing (and sealing) your hair daily is now more important than ever b/c where those 2 textures meet is really weak. And if it gets dry, it will so break. Some breakage is inevitable but I'm talking about uber noticeable breakage.

Deep conditioning is ESSENTIAL. I recommend DC'ing once a week. Again, when transitioning, your hair craves and needs that moisture to keep it strong and healthy. As far as using protein DC's, you just have to be in tune with your hair and add those in when you feel it's necessary. Some people use very little protein. Others incorporate more into their regimen. I didn't use very much and I was fine.

2) Shy away from combing your hair when it's dry

The only time a comb was coming anywhere near my hair was when it was sopping wet and SATURATED with a good detangling conditioner. At least dampen your hair with a spritz of choice or spritz some water if you just have to comb your hair when it's not wet. Combing your hair dry is asking for major breakage though. Not everybody's head is the same but I wouldn't even tempt breakage like that.

3) Find hairstyles that are all about low manipulation

Braids, wigs/half-wigs, weaves, buns, rollersets, bantu knot sets are great ways to maintain your sexy while transitioning. If the front of my hair was a lil puffy, I'd rock various styles of headbands to make the front look pretty and lay down some. No one knew by looking at me or my hair that I was transitioning unless I told them.

I learned about transitioning with half-wigs during my transition from fotki member, AppleJax. She had an instant weave (aka half-wig) tutorial up on her fotki. So yeah, hit up Fotki. A lot of the lovely ladies on there show pictures of what styles and techniques they used to transition succesfully. I learned so much from them! And continue to do so now as a natural.

Other ladies blow dry or flat iron their new growth so that it better blends with their relaxed hair. Be careful with this, as abusing heat could damage your natural hair. If you opt to do this, try to use heat sparingly and also make sure you are using some sort of heat protectant. (I don't have any suggestions on good heat protectant products as I rarely use direct heat anymore; even towards the end of my days as a relaxed head, I wasn't using direct heat anymore.)

You may be tired of hearing this but it's sooo true. Your transition more than likely will not be a good one without gathering some information first. You want to get an idea of what road lies ahead of you. You've got all these blogs, YouTube has a plethora of ladies offering their regimens, styling techniques, product reviews, etc. rather it be transitioning or as a natural. Fotki provides great resources and will have you drooling over all the beautiful hair as a result to great hair care. A lot of the ladies have picture tutorials for various natural and transitioning hair care, what products they use and styling techniques.

I did a post back in January called the Curly Girl Directory where I listed tons of places that I felt were great to go to for tips, information, resources, etc on transitioning and natural hair. So the information is out there and waiting for you to uncover it!

Happy Transitioning! For those on the fence about it, go on and go for it. You know you wanna! :0)

Get Fit: Gaiam Cardio Burn Yoga w/ Patricia Moreno

As Flava Flav says, "Wooooooooooowwwww." They were not lying when they said cardio burn, that's for sure. I would not recommend this work out for beginners but for those on an intermediate level or higher looking for a challenge or a new routine to do. This is a work out for ya. I'm going to have to do this one a few times before I can get in the groove with it. But I really like it and got a great work out with it. Ya girl was seriously sweating. LOL.

What I like about this workout, is that Patricia is a dancer. So the routine she created makes all the poses more "fluid", like dancing. Dancing flows from one move into another. So with this workout, you constantly stay in motion. The poses in the work out are choreographed so that you flow from one pose right into another. That's the best way I can describe it. If this has peaked your curiosity, then get your Curious George on, and get it! You'll see what I'm talking about all in due time!

What I really want to try is Bikram Yoga. You know, the one where the room is really warm (like 80 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit I've heard from some) so when you're doing the routines, you sweat more and burn more fat. I also imagine, with the warmer tempature, your muscles are more relaxed so you probably can get maximum stretching out of your body this way too. I heard it's awesome. Has anyone tried it?

Green & Chic: The Flyyest Way to Drink Your Water

Most of us have received the memo that the plastic bottles we drink water from, are not eco-friendly. Most of them end up in landfills and if you didn't know, plastic is practically incapable of decomposing. I mean, it's outliving your deceased great grandpa. And he might have died back in the '70s. Yikes! So they pose a real problem when it comes to the environment and waste management.

So what's a more eco-chic way to still drink your recommended 64oz of water a day and help de-clutter our beloved Mother Earth? The answer my AGCMers is aluminum water bottles. They're sturdy, last a long time, don't add to pollution, and come in some really cute designs to match your personality and/or style.

You save so much more money buying a water filter for better water, especially to drink it. I have the Brita pitcher water filter. Every 2 months, I pay $10 to replace the filter. Do you know how much money I'm saving by doing this (to use as drinking water for the aluminum water bottle) as opposed to buying bottled water? A LOT. So not only do you look more fly with an aluminum water bottle but you are saving major bucks. Imagine what you could do with that money you've just saved.....

There's tons brands out there already. Sigg is a very popular one but they can be pricey. I've seen cool designed ones at Old Navy. They were going for $5 when I was last in there. Your Wal-Mart and Target should carry them as well in their fitness section.

Get Fit: Some of my Favorite Work Out DVDs

So since, I'm getting back on my fitness grind, I'm going back to some of my trusty work out DVDs that have never steered me wrong and when I was consistent with them, gave me great results.

Sara Ivanhoe's 20 Min Yoga Makeover Power Beauty Sweat

In 20 minutes, you can get most of the benefits of yoga. This DVD is what's up. After doing this for about 2 weeks, I had definitely started seeing a difference in my body and how I felt. I love how after the work out, I always feel "long and lean" and energized for the day. It really works. This is also a great introduction to yoga for those that are new to it and want to give it a try. For those more experienced, it's a great way to get your morning stretch on.

I would say that I'm on an intermediate level of yoga and for me it's a great way to start my day before getting ready for work. I'm groggy in the morning and don't always want to do it but once I'm done, I always am glad I did b/c I feel good! It really does give me more energy for the day and when you're at work with your crazy co-workers, because we all have a couple of those, it really helps.

Pilates Complete for Everyone

When I want my Pilates fix, I luv this DVD. This one has work outs for the very beginner all the way up to advanced levels. This DVD contains over 35 workouts. Within each level, there are various work outs you can choose from. How dope is that? I also like that there are 10 minute routines you can do when you're low on time but still want to squeeze a work out in and longer ones, like 30 mins, when you can carve out more time in your schedule. You have so many options with this one. And I don't know about you, but I luv having options. It just makes life that much more exciting. LOL. I've had this DVD for a few years and still luv it to pieces.

I'm going to start talking about fitness more b/c being fit does affect our natural beauty (and hair, but of course). To be healthy is to be beautiful. Health and beauty go hand in hand. Besides, we all need to "preserve our sexy" and living an active lifestyle that includes some form of exercise is one of the ways to do that. Next Get Fit post, I will be talking about resistance bands. Another thing I like and need to get back to using.

I have 2 other yoga DVD's that are pretty new but have been collecting dust. LOL. But I will be busting them out and talking about them on here very soon. I truly believe that fitness CAN be (somewhat) enjoyable. You just have to find what kind you like. There's got to be SOMETHING you like. There are way too many options out there now as to what people can get into and there are new activities being created every day. That's my thought on the matter.

For exercising, I enjoy Pilates, yoga, dancing, aerobics, and power walking (so much easier on the knees than jogging or running and gives just as good of a cardio work out). I also luv reg walking like going to long walks walking. What about you guys? What are your exercises of choice?

DIY Guide: How I Do My Crochet Braids

Like I promised, here is how I do my crochet braids if anyone is interested in learning how to do them.

Click here to see this vid that shows how to crochet braid where you tie a double knot to keep the hair in instead of braiding the hair down some like I do.

Harlem Heights

So who watched this last night? I was a lil excited about this show b/c this looked like a show that portrayed Blacks not acting "stereotypical". All the people on here are young professionals. So, I tuned in for the first episode last night and I must say, I think I like it. My friends and my girls that I hang out with look like this and we are all young professionals also. It's funny too b/c a lot of the places that they showed them hanging out at, I've hung out there as well like Mocha's. Nice place.

I like Bree's "fashion energy" and how what she wears screams fashion lover. I luv it. I also like her hair cut. It is soo baaaaad! It looks so modern and chic. And I luv all things chic. I luv it. If I wasn't feeling the recession like I am, I would check out those boutiques they were hitting up but I'm not even going to do that to myself right now. LOL.

But overall, I think I'm going to give BET an A for this show. Finally! A show that showcases (young) professional Blacks and how they live. And this is a reality show so no one can say it is not real like when "The Cosby's" show was around. There ARE Blacks doing big things and we don't all talk "ebonics", sell drugs, or aspire to be rap artists. The members of this show are the Blacks I grew up with and how they talk and carry themselves, where they hang out, the friends they have is how I do. I hope this will inspire our younger generations to see, this is how you wanna get down. Ladies and gents that have their own jobs and aspirations and are go getters. Ladies not looking for a man to take care of them. Men not looking for a woman to take care of them. And a young father invovled in his child's life.

Now you know, there's going to be drama. It's all about the ratings. That's just how people do though and that's just how us LADIES do. It's called human nature and female nature. Oh well. Since I don't attract or entertain much drama in my own life, I enjoy watching it on tv! LOL. And that Bree seems like she likes some drama so I'll be staying tuned with some popcorn on hand. Oh come on, we all have a friend/s like that or know someone like that. Don't even front. LOL.

It's about time BET! A show we can be proud to admit we watch. What are your thoughts on the show?

Billy Blanks Almost Took Me Out!

Just goes to show how outta shape a sista is. LOL. I'm trying to get back on my fitness tip b/c we all need to be fit and because it's part of the guidelines of my Grow Out Challenge I'm doing with some of my NC (Naturally Curly) ladies. So I did Pilates yesterday and today, I was feeling adventurous and said let's do some TaeBo. I was fine up until about half way through and then ya girl just started pooping out! I worked out muscles I KNOW I haven't worked out in a while. So I will be good and sore tomorrow. But no pain, no gain, right? Then after I nearly passed out from the workout, Aunt Ruby Red decides to show her face. That's probably part of the reason why I was crampin up and half dieing. LOL. Great work out though. I just gotta get back in the groove, that's all. So even though Billy would have liked to kill me this time, it aint ova till the fat lady sings. "I aint neva scared".

I must say, after about 10 minutes of deep breathing and identifying that Ruby was part of the problem, I do feel a boost of energy. I feel good and ready to take on the day. I've always exercised but I'm one of those people that does it in waves. There will be like a 4-5 month wave where I'll be on my grind and be a lean mean exercising machine but then something will happen and I'll fall off for another 4-5 months and then I'll get back on it...... And cycle goes on and on.

My goal this time is to try to stay consistent with it and really make it a part of my lifestyle b/c I eat pretty healthy (except for the occasional cheeseburger deluxe meal at the diner. LOL). I am not one to eat in excess or eat lots of sweets n stuff. So for me, it's just about keeping active and I love the way I feel after I've done a work out or a fun activity that gets my heart rate up, like salsa dancing (I <3 salsa dancin!), or going for a long walk in Central Park. Yay for the Spring coming up so I can get back to walking Central Park. I luv going for walks in that park!

As most of us know, fitness is great for stimulating hair growth. The gist of the theory goes that when exercising, you sweat and your pores are open including those on your scalp which increases the flow of blood and your overall circulation. Increase in blood flow and circulation to your scalp helps stimulate growth. There it is in a nutshell.

And now that I think about it, when I was in college and I was taking the prenatal vitamins and excercising regularly (I was also on a step team), my hair was growing like a weed. My hair had never grown that fast ever, so there is def something to this. So come on my kinky-kurly-koily ladies, let's get in shape and get our hair growing like weeds!

Crochet Braids

So I finished crochet braiding my hair yesterday. I can't cornrow my own hair, so I asked my friend to do it for me and then I did the crocheting myself. I was lazy and took 50 million breaks so I did them over 2 days. But if you are about your business, most say they can complete them in about 3 to 4 hours. I plan to leave them in for about 6 weeks. Luv my braids! So I used a brand called Model Model Glance in the "Circle Curl" braiding hair:

This hair cost me about $5/pack at a local BSS in Harlem. My Nyc ladies know about 125th St where there are BSS' everywhere, so take your pick. I can't remember the name of the store that I went to. Only that it was one of the many on 125th St.

I used a loooooooot of hair: 2 and a half packs of hair. Yikes! I have serious Diana Ross hair going on:

But it's all good. I like how they turned out with this hair.

So what ARE crochet braids, some of you ask? They are kinda like a weave in a way. All your hair is cornrowed straight back and instead of sewing tracks to the cornrows like a weave, you use a crochet hook to pull individual pieces of hair through the cornrows. To finish them, you can either tie them in a (double) knot or braid it down a little and use some nail glue to keep them from coming undone. Understand?

What You'll Need:
- Know how to cornrow or know someone that can do it for you
- Crochet hook - can get them at craft stores where the pile rug kits are
- 2 to 3 packs of hair - safe to have more hair so you don't run out
- Nail glue - this is to keep the ends from unraveling/coming loose

My Notes:
* Crochet braids look best with curly or wavy hair b/c they take up space so you can't see the cornrows (I would imagine with straight hair, you would have to use a lot though)

* I actually have some reg synthetic braiding hair braided w/ my cornrows so they they will last longer.

* Try to insert the hair along the rows like you would lay bricks so that you are filling spaces. Does that sound right? You don't want them to all be in the same place along each cornrow, or you will have spaces.

They're so ridiculously easy to do and very affordable. The crochet hook cost me a major $2. Like I said before, the hair cost me $5/pack. I used 2.5 packs of hair. I have serious big hair so many of you may prefer to use less. And the nail glue was a whopping $2 and you can get that from your local drugstore. So the total cost for this 6-8 week hairstyle: about $20. $20! It doesn't get much better than that. This is def a recession style hairstyle.

You can soooo do them yourself. Or because they're so easy, see if you can get a friend or family member to help so you can speed up the time. (That's what I should have done. LOL.) I created a short vid demonstrating how I do mine which I will put up soon. My comp is being difficult with uploading it so please have patience with me. Happy Monday!

Prenatal Vitamins For Hair Growth

I got my prenatal vitamins like I said I would. I bought mine from Trader Joe's today and took my first one today. As stated in the pic, a 60 day supply costs about $13. My goal is to take them every morning with my breakfast so that it just becomes habit to get my day started with taking them before I have time to forget taking them in the middle of the day. So that's my plan.

Do any of you take any vitamins or hair vitamins to optimize your growth? I used to take Silica and it did give my hair growth a boost. I can't remember why I stopped taking them though. LOL. Overall, I like prenatal vitamins better b/c they also include other good things for your body.

I've heard of a Chinese tea that is supposed to be good for stimulating hair growth. It's called Dong Quai. They were talking about it on good ol LHCF. I plan to research it and sharing my findings and thoughts on it. So stay tuned for that. I plan to be very active this week so I may not get to research it till next week.

Hope everyone had great weekends. It's back to the weekly grind!
